ABSTRACT
Dissociation is defined as a disruption in the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity or perception of the environment. It has been described as manifesting in experiences of amnesia, absorption, depersonalization and derealization. Dissociation has been found in varying levels in the general population. However, pathological dissociation in adults was found to be linked with childhood trauma. Research findings have revealed relations among past trauma, dissociation, and trauma-related distress like posttraumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder or eating disorders. This presentation provides a review of research concerning presence and significance of dissociation in eating disorders with respect to traumatic experiences.
