ABSTRACT
The aim of this paper is to describe the course of strategic therapy for modifying and improving negative relationships within the family.
Drawing on the assumptions of strategic therapy and the author’s own therapeutic practice, the paper presents effective techniques for creating or restoring positive relationships between family members. The specific techniques include various types of homework and interviews with the whole family, as well as positive behavioral labeling and paradoxical directives. The main conclusions of this paper indicate that during therapy aimed at improving relationships in the family, it is necessary to consider various types of triads (intergenerational, between siblings) and skills for resolving difficulties arising from the transition through the various stages of the family life cycle. It is also extremely important to involve children in therapy, as it is difficult to imagine utilizing most techniques of strategic therapy – especially homework tasks, gathering information about the family, identifying triads, and understanding the family life cycle – without the participation of all family members.
