ABSTRACT
The authors analyse the differences and similarities between family and marriage therapy. They discuss the theoretical basis for both types of therapy, different ways by which family members or partners come to therapy, motivation for therapy and for change, as well as transference and countertransference reactions in both types of therapy. The formal expectations, especially in training and therapeutic skills of therapists in family and marriage therapy are also discussed.
