The aim of this article is to discuss the transference–countertransference phenomenon with reference to group psychotherapy, especially in relation to the stages of group development. The author of the article quotes the theory of group development created by Yvonne M. Agazarian and Richard Peters, which derives from Systems-Centered Therapy (SCT). She also mentions the stages of group work described by Irvin Yalom. The most important aspects of transference and its main types are briefly considered with reference to group psychotherapy. Through this article, the reader’s attention is drawn to the ambivalent nature of transference. Readers will notice what is evident and directly present in group’s communication, as well as what is hidden, omitted and passed over in silence. The text includes clinical examples from the author’s workplace that help understand this phenomenon. The author points to potential difficulties that may be experienced by therapists under the influence of countertransference during different stages of group psychotherapy.
