ABSTRACT
This article presents the empirical ways of verifying the effectiveness of psychotherapy, mainly the methods assessing the clinical significance of change experienced by patients. At the beginning, the statistical significance and effect size are described, and in the next part the following clinical significance methods and concepts are reviewed: the reliable change index method and its modifications, the normative comparisons method, the quality of life concept, the social validation concept and the number needed to treat method. In addition, there is some data concerning the popularity of using the ways of investigating the effects of psychotherapy by researchers.
