ABSTRACT
Aim. The aim of the research was to analyse the personality traits of spouses applying for therapy. Implications for marital therapy were discussed. Method. Research included 20 marriages qualified for the marital therapy and 20 marriages, who were not seeking any therapy. Participants evaluated themselves and their mates using the Adjective Check List ACL. Results. The spouses who applied for the therapy in comparison with those not seeking any help, presented lower self-esteem, little self-confidence, tendency to deference and higher level of succorance. They assessed their partners very critically, attributed to them a lot of unfavourable adjectives and reproached them with lack of readiness to seek compromises. They considered them as too independent, impulsive and aggressive. They perceived their relationship as asymmetric, similar to a relation between the Critical Parent and the Adapted Child. Conclusions. Asymmetrical relation, criticism and mutual accusation of spouses applying for the therapy should be treated by the therapist with special attention in order to preserve objectivism and not to get involved in the conflict. It seems to be correct to take into account the partners' individual personality characteristics and tendency to decree partners' consciousness of their different perspectives of seeing themselves and the problem.
