Czy neuroscience wyjaśnia efekty psychoterapii schizofrenii? 5
Do neuroscience researches explain the effectiveness of psychotherapy? 5
Neuroscientific researches explaining the effectiveness of psychotherapy went in three directions. The first, basing on a theory of memory explicit (declarative memory, consciousness) and implicit (non-declarative memory, unconsciousness) aims at the reinterpretation of the mechanisms of psychotherapy. This method is useful in analyzing effects of cognitive psychotherapy but also psychoanalytic orientated psychotherapy which is basing on interpretations and insight.
The second current in such research is connected with the possibility neuroimaging gives to evaluate changes occurring in the course of therapy. According to this method it is possible to show biological mechanisms of therapeutic alliance or reduction of basic fear. The third and last direction investigates changes in metabolism of neural cells in the brain under the influence of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Results of these investigations are particularly interesting showing more specifically changes in the course of psychotherapy rather than pharmacotherapy of depressive disorder. Most of the investigations concern depressive or obsessive - compulsive disorder because of a high homogeneity of these disorders. In schizophrenia, which in contradistinction to them is quite a heterogeneous one, it is difficult to construct a useful scientific design. But the possibility which neuroscience offers to explain the effects of psychotherapy is still nonetheless present.

The forgotten lesson of Aesklepios 13
Can modern psychiatry take a lesson out of the teaching of old Aesklepios? What could he teach us? Do our patients profit out of his lesson? The presented paper focuses on modern psychiatry, with its theories and methods which are still under the influence of another medical tradition, namely those of Hippocrates. On the example of the history of one patient, the paper shows how we can combine these two medical traditions in our practice and how our patients can take benefit from that.

Early mother—child relation in the pathogenesis of narcissistic personality disorder 19
This article explores the issue of the developmental psychopathology of narcissistic personality disorder based on object relation theory and through the perspective of the mother-child relationship. M.Mahler, H.Kohut, O.Kenrberg and A.Schore's concepts are presented in the article to assist in explaining the nature of pathogenesis found in the early relational experience of the narcissistic character. According to Mahler's Separation-Individuation Theory there are three contributors to narcissism: self-love, omnipotence and the primitive valuation of the infant's accomplishments. The development of these three elements is dependent on a subphase-adequate type of mothering. Kohut and Kernberg's theories describe the defensive and deficit-based pathology in the early stages of the child's relationship with the caregiver in the case of narcissistic personality. Finally, Schore accents the role of shame regulation in its pathogenesis that emerges in the practicing period of mother-child relationship interactions. Each of these theories, despite their differences, stresses the importance of the mother-child relationship perspective in the understanding and treatment of narcissistic personality disorder.

Some remarks on paedophilia 45
Much attention has been directed to the issue of paedophilia recently. Unfortunately, the efforts of the mass-media do not seem to bring the expected results. To the opposite, we seem to acquire unclear knowledge concerning the syndrome of paedophilia as well as its scope. The paper is an attempt at systematizing knowledge of paedophilia and is naturally addressed to psychologists and psychotherapists, who are capable of aiding both the disordered persons and their victims. The paper is based on the latest publications presented in specialist periodicals within the last two years. It tackles the issue of defining the syndrome of paedophilia and its scope. The article presents the results of research concerning both the disordered persons and their victims. Particular concern is given to the latter. The author also indicates the consequences of paedophilia and dynamics of experiencing abuse. Some indications aiding diagnosis are also presented.

The defensive role of the self-image in schizophrenia 57
The paper presents some findings of a prospective study on the self-image of patients ill with schizophrenia. The observation of the changes in a self-portrait of patients through 7 years from the time of the first admission to hospital showed that self-image is not only a dynamic and changing-with-time structure but it plays the defensive roles against awareness of being mentally ill and feelings which are aroused with this fact. The stronger the patient's tendency to deny the illness at the beginning, the more pessimistic the self-picture they have after the 7-year period. And reversely, the acceptance of the illness and weak tendency to be defensive results in greater self-satisfaction and optimism in later life.

Nourishment in younger schoolchildren and the process of separation from important persons 77
480 Polish pre-pubertal schoolchildren aged 7 to 9 years and their parents were separately assessed for children's ideal body sizes by means of pictorial figures. Children's height and weight were measured and body-mass indices (BMI) were calculated. 10% of overweight, 38% of undernourished and 31% of normal weight children had a different ideal body size image from their parents'. No differences between boys and girls were found. The authors discuss the meaning of this conflict in the separation process.
